Three-phase wiring is favored amongst larger commercial units due to its flexibility and being more economical. Smaller equipment and lighting which require lower power are powered using 120v single phase whereas larger equipment requiring higher power needs a three phase 208v power circuit.

A phase converter allows power to go from a single phase source to multiple phase such as three-phrase. This allows a business to use equipment dependent on three-phase from a single-phase service. It may be more cost effective for a business to use a phase converter rather than install a three-phase service.
